The Midwest is heating up again for van freight. More loads moved out of Chicago, and Columbus had fewer loads than the previous week, but rates were up in both markets. Unfortunately, rates fell lower pretty much everywhere else. Another rebound could still be on the way, though, because many shippers will pay extra to move their freight before they close their books at the end of the year.

DOT is already warning drivers to stay home in Tennessee and Kentucky. By tomorrow morning, you'll hear the same advice all along the East Coast, from New York down to South Carolina. Be careful out there!

A lot of truckers must have stayed home between Christmas and New Year's Day. Shippers still wanted to move their freight last week, though,and bad weather was also in the mix. So the load-to-truck ratio for vans rocketed up to 3.4 loads per truck.

The roundtrip rate between Memphis and Columbus averages $1.89/mile, which is not bad these days. If you can complete the roundtrip in two days, go for it. If you get held up in traffic or you have to wait at the dock, look for a TriHaul that helps you to make better use of your truck and your driving hours on that third day.

Remember the good old days? Like, two weeks ago? We were riding high on a big surge in rates, but that surge was a little short-lived. Load posts on TruckersEdge trailed off a bit, and the national van rate slipped 5¢ to $1.71/mile, a little above where we were before Thanksgiving.

Miami is usually a dead-end at this time of year. There are a lot of loads from Atlanta to Miami, and those rates are going up every day, so you might be tempted. If you can complete the roundtrip from Atlanta to Miami and back in three days. BUT…if you get held up at the dock or you get stuck in traffic along the way, you could run out of hours.

There's not a lot of flatbed freight these days, but you can find some decent loads from Mobile, AL to Roanoke, VA. The pickings are slim on the return trip. Surprisingly, you might do better with two loads instead of one.
